eBay Payouts on Hold: What Each Hold Message Means and What to Do

·Henry

Short answer

On eBay, funds marked “On hold” mean the buyer has paid, but the money is not yet available for payout. eBay’s help pages describe two main kinds of hold. A transaction hold usually ends after eBay confirms the item was delivered. A payout hold usually lasts until an account issue is fixed, such as verifying your identity, bank account, or business details. eBay explains what it needs in your account messages.

Key takeaways

  • eBay’s Transaction holds help page explains that funds marked On hold come from a sale the buyer has already paid for, but the money is not yet available for payout.
  • A transaction hold is tied to one sale. eBay says it holds the funds while it waits to confirm the item was delivered. Adding tracking helps.
  • A payout hold is tied to your account. eBay says a payout hold “usually requires further seller action on the account,” such as a registration, compliance, performance, or payment method issue.
  • When you register as a seller or update relevant account information, eBay says it will confirm your identity, your checking account details, and your business details if applicable. A registered business is asked for its business address.
  • We did not find an eBay help page that explains the code MC011. Follow the instructions in the message eBay sent you.

What does “payouts on hold” mean on eBay?

eBay’s Transaction holds help page explains the On hold label. In short, the page says that when funds from a recent sale show as On hold, the buyer has paid, but the money is not yet available for payout. The money exists in your eBay account. eBay has not released it to your bank yet.

The same page says money from sales can be held for two broad reasons. One reason is that the transaction has not been completed yet. The other reason is that eBay is checking your account information. The first kind usually ends when the buyer receives the item. The second kind usually lasts until the account issue is resolved.

eBay’s seller guide on its Exports site uses the same split. It says transaction holds are when eBay “places a hold on funds related to a particular buyer transaction.” It says payout holds are when eBay “holds funds payable to a particular seller, and usually requires further seller action on the account.”

So the first step is to find out which hold you have. eBay’s Getting paid help page says that funds can show as Blocked because of a payout hold, and that you may need to verify more information on your account before eBay can start payouts. eBay’s Payments on hold guide says: “You can check on the status of a payment by going to the Payments tab in Seller Hub.”

How to read each eBay hold message

The table below lists the hold types eBay describes in its help pages. The middle column uses eBay’s own words where we quote it. The last column is what eBay says you can do, or what the pages point you to.

Funds on hold until delivery and new seller holds

A transaction hold usually ends after eBay confirms the item was delivered. eBay’s Transaction holds page says tracking information is a factor in when funds are released for most orders. The page also says items sent without tracking usually take longer to release.

The Transaction holds page lists typical release times for each kind of new seller. The times depend on whether you registered as an individual or a business, and on how you ship: with an eBay shipping label, with another tracked label, or without tracking. Items sent without tracking generally wait the longest. Check that page, or the Payments tab in Seller Hub, for the times that apply to your orders.

The same page says a new individual seller can start getting funds faster after building a record of completed sales with few open requests, cases, or transaction defects. The page lists the exact thresholds.

The page also describes holds for infrequent sellers, sellers whose accounts were recently restricted, high priced items, and items sold with eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee. eBay’s Payments on hold guide on its export site names several of the same cases, including previously restricted or suspended sellers, “High priced items or unusual selling patterns,” and items sold with eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee.

Some sellers search for a specific number, such as a hold “for 5 days.” The eBay pages we read do not list a 5 day hold. The Transaction holds page says a hold can last longer if eBay suspects a problem with the order. If eBay needs you to do something before releasing held funds, the page says you will see a banner on your account and a message in My eBay.

Payouts on hold until you update account details

A payout hold is different from a delivery hold. The money is ready, but eBay will not send it until your account details pass a check. eBay’s seller registration guide for bank account payouts says: “When you register as an eBay seller or if you update any relevant information on your account, eBay will confirm your identity, checking account details for payouts, and business details if applicable.”

The guide says eBay will tell you when it cannot verify something. eBay will notify you in My eBay messages and put an alert on your account. The guide says: “In these notifications, eBay will provide details of any additional information needed from you and instructions on how to send it.”

The guide lists what eBay asks for. Individual sellers provide their full name, address, date of birth, and Social Security Number. A registered business provides identification for its beneficial owners, officers, directors, or account managers. The business also provides its legal business name, any DBA name, its Employer Identification Number (EIN), its business address, and a phone number.

The bank account must match the eBay account. The guide says: “The business name associated with your checking account should be the same as the business name you use to register on eBay.” It also says you need a business checking account to register a business seller account. To verify the bank account, eBay asks for the name on the account, bank name, routing number, account number, and a bank statement.

The guide lists what the bank statement must show. It must be for the account you are registering and show your name or legal business name. It must show “your address and account number” and be “less than 3 months old.” It must contain the bank’s logo and name and recent transactions without values. The guide also says it must be “a bank statement, not a letter from the bank.” Our guide to proof of address documents for a business compares the papers other platforms accept.

What does MC011 mean on eBay?

Some sellers search for “MC011 payouts on hold.” We looked for an eBay help page that explains the code MC011. We did not find one in the eBay help pages and seller guides we searched. So we cannot tell you what eBay means by that code.

What eBay’s pages do say applies to any payout hold notice. eBay says it notifies you by email and in your account, and it explains what it needs and how to send it. Reply through the steps in that message. If you cannot find the request, eBay’s help pages point you to Messages in My eBay.

Which address eBay asks for during verification

Two addresses come up in eBay’s verification steps. The first is the address on your seller account. For a registered business, eBay’s guide lists “Business address” among the details to provide. The guide also says: “You’ll need to verify your address and phone number.” The second is the address printed on your bank statement, which eBay says must show “your address and account number.”

The eBay pages we read do not say whether the business address must match the address on the bank statement. They also do not say which kinds of address eBay accepts for that field. If eBay rejects an address, the notice it sends should say what it needs. Our guide to Amazon, Etsy, and eBay address rules covers the other address fields marketplaces ask for, such as item location.
