This is the pattern we built the tool around. Jane is one founder, but the timeline is the same for most people who hired a registered agent and assumed that was the end of it.

  1. Day 0

    Day 0 — the postcard. Jane runs her design studio as an LLC from her apartment in San Francisco. Eight months ago she paid $125 a year for a registered agent — for privacy. Then a postcard arrives. No government seal, no fake deadline. One line: “You hired a registered agent. Your home address is still public.” And one instruction: “Don’t take our word for it. Google your LLC name plus California Secretary of State.”

    +2 minutes — the search. First result: a state filing PDF. Her name and her home address, side by side, on the manager line. Below it, a data-aggregator site repeating both. She paid for privacy and got one field of it.

  3. +5 minutes

    +5 minutes — the check. She runs her company name through this tool. It shows her address masked — 1** M**** St — because a privacy company shouldn’t display the thing it protects. One green field. Four red ones.

  4. +2 days

    +2 days — the fix. One amended Statement of Information, filed online: every red field now shows a commercial address instead of her home.

  5. +3 weeks

    +3 weeks — the proof. Her first piece of business mail arrives as a scan on her dashboard. Not in her home mailbox.

What a California filing exposes

Every California LLC files a Statement of Information — Form LLC-12. The form has five address fields, and the whole document is a public record. This is what that looks like.

What this check can and can't do

Past filings stay in state archives. Every filing going forward can show a commercial address instead.

The check reads what is publicly visible right now. It can miss a very recent filing, and it never shows the addresses it finds — we check exposure, we don't display it.

Common questions

How did you find me?

We read the same sources anyone can: the California Secretary of State's public business search, ordinary search-engine results, and the data-aggregator sites that republish state records. The check runs on your business name only — searching by a person's name is not supported, and we won't add it.

Can I delete past filings?

Realistically, no. Filed documents stay in state archives, and removal generally requires a court order. What you can control is every filing going forward: an amended Statement of Information can place a commercial address in the fields that currently show your home, and aggregator sites pick up the new record when they recrawl.

Do you store what I search?

No. We don't store the business names you check — our analytics keeps only an irreversible hash — and an address you paste for the residential check is read in memory and never stored. The only thing we keep is your email address, which we use to send you your report.

What does a registered agent actually cover?

A registered agent is only required to cover one of the five address fields on a California Statement of Information — the agent for service of process. The other four fields show whatever address was filed in them, and for most one-person companies that is a home address. This check looks at what's actually on the record, not at what any provider promises.

Do I need an anonymous LLC?

An LLC formed in a state that keeps owner names off its filings can help with name privacy, but the protection depends on where the company actually operates: doing business in California means registering there, which creates a California public record of its own. Address privacy works differently — in any state, you can file a commercial address instead of your home address, and that is the part this tool checks.
